DEAR PATIENT,

Edentulous jaws are not uncommon and often are initially treated with simple prostheses that do not provide firm support and, thus, significantly affect your quality of life. Modern techniques can remedy this deficiency and, therefore, significantly increase your well-being. This is possible with implants – artificial tooth roots – that securely anchor your removable dentures. In addition to the secure hold of the dentures, implants can also be supplied with fixed dentures that meet the high aesthetic standards. In both cases the restoration is very close to the functions of the natural teeth and their aesthetic appearance.

In addition to aesthetics and function, the implant-supported fixed prosthesis offers another advantage: by simply connecting the sprocket to the implants, you can fully enjoy food and drinks as your taste senses are not affected by the dentures.

We would like to inform you about the special features of the implant-based prosthesis on this page. If you have any questions or would like to arrange a non-binding consultation, please do not hesitate to call us.

Kind regards

Dr. Dr. Georgios Mistakidis, Dr. Dr. Oliver Vorwig and Dr. Dr. Carsten Kohlmeier

WHY IMPLANTS FOR TOOTHLESS JAWS

Mucosa-supported prostheses rarely provide sufficient support, as the bone in the edentulous jaw recedes and, therefore, changes the adhesive base of the prosthesis over time. To give the prosthesis a firm hold, it can be firmly anchored both on the lower and on the upper jaw on implants – artificial tooth roots – thus, simulating the functions of the natural teeth. Adhesive cream and adjustments of the prosthesis can be completely dispensed with. Pressure points, pain and inflammation are then a thing of the past.

If you want to be the closest to the natural series of teeth in terms of aesthetics and function, four implants in the lower jaw and at least six implants in the upper jaw can be used to connect rows of teeth firmly to the implants (fixed dentures). Visually, this supply of natural teeth is virtually indistinguishable. The fact that the taste buds are not affected allows you to enjoy food and drinks as before to the fullest.

The other good news: Implants do not have to be expensive. The large number of established implant providers and the different implant technologies allow for low price offers. In the meantime, supplemental dental insurance also subsidises or often takes over the cost of implant dentures.

EDENTULOUS JAW AND IMPLANTS - HOW DOES IT WORK?

Before each treatment of an edentulous jaw is first a detailed examination of the patient. In particular, it is examined whether the jawbone is suitable for an implant, if necessary the bone supply must be increased (bone structure), determines the general medical status of the patient and his individual request.

Rarely, there are reasons against implants. Therefore, almost every edentulous patient can be treated with implants. Beforehand, the desire of the patient must be determined, whether he/she tolerates a prosthesis, which calls for space in the oral cavity or the dentures should be designed as small as possible, in particular not to disturb the function of the taste buds and speech.

If dentures in the form of a prosthesis are desired, the prosthesis with implants can be fixed firmly in the mouth, whereby the prosthesis can be removed from the mouth for cleaning and the visible parts of the implants can also be cleaned.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

In Germany, of the approximately 17 million of the over 65-year-olds

  • 31.2% are toothless in the upper jaw = 5.4 million
  • 23.3% without teeth in the lower jaw = 4 million

This results in a total of 9.4 million edentulous jaws in Germany alone.

THE TREATMENT PROCESS

1. INSERTION OF THE IMPLANT
In our dental office, implantation care is a routine procedure that takes little time. Due to the selected anaesthetic, the treatment is completely painless for you. However, if you do not want to experience the minimal procedure while you are awake, we are also happy to treat you with semiconscious sedation or under general anaesthesia.

Due to the precise planning of the implantation, where the artificial tooth root (implant) is introduced into the jawbone, often only a small incision in the gum is required. Opening the gum allows us to prepare the implant bed and insert the small screw into the bone.

2. HEALING PHASE
Immediately after insertion of the implant, the bone healing processes begin in the jaw. These healing processes are the faster and safer, the gentler the implants are inserted. The implant materials we use have a very high biocompatibility, so that the newly forming bone cells attach themselves directly to the implant and enclose it as firmly as a natural tooth root over time. This integration process lasts – depending on the initial situation – about 10 to 20 weeks. In some cases, e.g. with good bone conditions or certain implant systems, the implants used are even immediately resilient and can be provided with the new dentures.

3. SUPPLY WITH NEW TEETH BY YOUR DENTIST
Depending on the number of implants inserted and the system used, the edentulous jaw can either be supplied with a prosthesis fixed to the implants or with fixed dentures in the form of crowns and bridges.

As a rule, prostheses are connected to the implant by a kind of “push-button system”. This way, the prostheses are firmly fixed and can be removed for oral hygiene. If the edentulous jaw is supplied with fixed dentures in the form of crowns and bridges, these are glued or screwed to the implants. Thus, the dentures sit as tight as your own teeth.

OUR RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOU

TREATMENT WITH AN IMPLANT SHOULD BE CHOSEN INSTEAD OF A TREATMENT WITH A BRIDGE AS A GENERAL RULE FOR THE FOLLOWING REASONS:

  • Increase your well-being through firmly anchored prostheses or fixed dentures.
  • With fixed dentures, say goodbye to bruises, pains and use of adhesive cream.

  • Eat what you like and not what your dentures allow you to eat.

  • Do not worry about medical expenses, there is a solution for every budget.

  • Implants with a securely fixed denture increase your well-being to a much greater extent than you would expect.
